How paying for your piece works

Once you approve your design and quote, you choose how to pay: all at once, a deposit up front, or a little at a time. Klarna financing is available at checkout on most payments. This page explains each option, and how paying over time works in detail.

Pay in full

One payment

  • Your price is locked the moment you pay.
  • We order materials and start production right away.

Deposit

At least half now, the rest before pickup

  • Locks your price and starts production.
  • The rest is due before pickup or shipping.

Pay over time

Your pace, from $10 a month

  • Pay any amount, whenever you like, as long as something comes in every month.
  • Each stage of your piece moves forward as it is paid for.

1. Pay in full, or a deposit

These are the quickest ways to get your piece made. Either one locks your price and starts production straight away.

  • Pay in full: one payment for the whole quote. Nothing else is due.
  • Deposit: at least half of your quote now; your project page shows the exact percentage. It locks your price and starts production, and the rest is due before your piece is picked up or shipped.
  • Deposits are non-refundable. They pay for the materials and vendor work we commit to on your behalf.

2. Pay over time: the idea

Paying over time lets you work toward a custom piece at your own pace, with no fixed schedule and no interest. Think of it as a layaway plan for custom jewelry.

The plan has one goal: secure the most important parts of your piece first. A custom piece is made from things we have to buy, like a specific stone and the gold or platinum for its setting. Your payments go toward those in order of how hard they would be to replace. Each time a stage is paid for, we buy what it covers, and that part of your piece is secured.

3. The stages

Your payments fill these stages in order. Every dollar goes to the first stage that isn't paid yet; it is never split across stages.

  1. Stone

Your center stone and the design fee

When paid · We buy your stone. It can no longer sell to anyone else.

  2. Mounting

The metal for your setting and any accent stones

When paid · We buy the metal, and the mounting price is locked.

  3. Production

Labor, casting, 3D work, quality checks and shipping

When paid · Your piece goes to the bench and is made.

  4. Balance

    Sales tax on your total

When paid · Paid in full. Your piece is ready to pick up or ship.

Why the stone comes first

Your center stone is usually one specific stone. Until we buy it, someone else can, and the next comparable stone may cost more. Metal and labor can always be bought again, so they wait their turn. If your quote has no center stone, your payments start with the mounting.

You can always see where you stand

Your project page shows each stage with its dollar amount, which ones are secured, and exactly how much more secures the next one, for example “$340 more secures your stone.” It also shows your next payment and the date it's due by, the price of each stage as of today, and the latest news on your stone.

4. A worked example

Say your ring is quoted at $4,000 before tax: a $2,000 stone stage, a $1,200 mounting stage and an $800 production stage.

StageStage costSecured once you've paid
Stone$2,000$2,000
Mounting$1,200$3,200
Production$800$4,000
Balancesales taxpaid in full
  • You pay $500 a month. After four months you've paid $2,000: your stone is secured and we buy it.
  • Over the next few months you reach $3,200: the metal is bought and your mounting price is locked.
  • At $4,000 your piece goes into production. Sales tax is the last step, and then it's yours.
  • You can speed up at any time. One $1,500 payment in month two, or financing the $2,000 stone stage with Klarna on day one, would secure the stone that day.

5. What's locked, and what can still move

  • Anything you've paid for is locked. A stage that is paid off never changes price.
  • Your stone isn't held until its stage is paid. Its price is set, but the stone itself can still sell to someone else. Until the stone stage is paid we check its availability every week and email you what we find. If it sells, we'll tell you right away and find you a comparable one.
  • The metal price follows the market until the mounting stage is paid. Gold and platinum prices move every day. We check the price of your unpaid mounting daily and only change it if metal has moved 5% or more since it was last priced, up or down. When it changes, we email you, and your project page shows the new price and the date.
  • Labor and our own fees don't float. Only the metal is tied to the market.
  • Sales tax is calculated on your total, so it moves with the unpaid mounting price until that price is locked.

With a deposit or payment in full, the whole price locks the day you pay, so none of this applies.

6. Lock things in sooner with Klarna

Don't want to wait months to secure your stone? Klarna is available at checkout on most payments — Klarna sets its own minimum and maximum amounts — so you can finance a payment and spread the cost over time with Klarna, while we receive the full amount and act on it right away.

  • Secure your stone today. Finance the stone stage with Klarna and your stone is bought, off the market and no longer at risk of selling.
  • Lock any price, at any point. It isn't just for the stone. Use Klarna for any payment, toward any stage, whenever you want to lock in what that stage covers, such as the metal price on your mounting.
  • Mix and match. You can use Klarna for one payment and a card for the next. Klarna also works for a deposit or for paying in full, within Klarna's limits.
  • Klarna sets its own terms. Choose Klarna at checkout to see the plans you qualify for. Approval, interest and repayment are between you and Klarna, and the payment counts toward your project in full the moment it goes through.

7. The ground rules for paying over time

Before you start, you'll confirm you agree to these:

  • Something every month. There is no schedule and no set amount; the only requirement is at least $10 each month on each order. Pay more whenever you like, up to the remaining balance.
  • Reminders. We email you a week before and the day before each monthly payment is due, in one email covering all your orders.
  • All payments are non-refundable. Once a stage is paid, we've bought what it covers for you.
  • Nothing leaves the studio until it's paid in full. “Secured” means we've bought it and are holding it for you. The finished piece is yours when the balance is paid.

If a month goes by with no payment

The order becomes overdue, and the studio may cancel it. If it is cancelled:

  • If your stone stage was fully paid, the stone is paid for, and you can collect it.
  • Money paid toward a stage that wasn't finished is forfeited, because those materials have already been bought or committed.
  • Unfinished work is not released.

If money is tight one month, tell us before it gets there. Even $10 keeps your order in good standing.

8. How to make a payment

  • Online, any time: open your project in your account, choose an amount, and check out, the same way you'd buy something from the shop. Your payment is credited to your project as soon as it clears.
  • Several pieces at once: payments toward more than one project, and anything else from the shop, can go through in a single checkout.
  • In person: you're always welcome to pay at the studio.
  • Accepted: major credit and debit cards and Klarna, through our secure checkout powered by Stripe. Depending on your device, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Link may also appear.
  • Changed your mind? If you start paying over time and later want to pay the rest in full, you can switch at any point.

Ready-made pieces from the shop

Pieces already listed in the shop are paid in full at checkout. Payment plans are for custom work.
